How E-Commerce Changed The Game For MHS Holdings

From Louisville Business First’s Fast 50 Awards:

 

Brian Johnson became MHS Holdings Inc.’s first CFO in 2012. He credits the meteoric rise of e-commerce as a key component of the company’s rapid revenue growth since then.

 

The Louisville-based company engineers, constructs and installs conveyor and automated-sortation systems, and its success has earned MHS Holdings the No. 5 spot on Business First’s 2016 Fast 50 list.

 

Johnson, a 2015 honoree of Business First’s CFO of the Year awards, says developing products and designating an effective team to support the ever-changing needs of their customers have helped foster an increasingly strong company.

 

Overall, retail sales are declining as more customers continually opt to shop online. But MHS Holdings’ revenue increased more than $120 million from 2014, reaching a 2015 total just shy of $300 million.

 

At last count, MHS Holdings employed nearly 300 at its local operations.

 

“We have expanded warehouse capacity by more than 100,000 square feet,” Johnson adds. “Manufacturing, we’ve increased by 25,000 square feet.”

 

President Greg Judge says the extra manufacturing space is continually needed. Greater warehousing capacity is in demand to support the company’s business model, which has evolved over its 17-year history.

 

Judge says he considers the company’s biggest accomplishment in the past year to be the continuation of its multi-year growth pattern while maintaining the highest standard of quality and service in the industry.

 

“We successfully started up all projects in the last year on time for all of our customers,” Judge says.

 

Judge says the explosive increase in package shipping volumes has led to unprecedented growth in the parcel industry. And he says it’s cultivating the company’s growth.

 

“Our ability to provide solutions that our customers need to meet their volume demands has positioned us to continue to grow at such a significant rate,” Judge says. “We have added over 50 employees in engineering, manufacturing, project management, administration.”

 

Those employees are needed to accommodate the increased demand for its products, he says. Judge projects the company to hit new levels next year.

 

“We have continued to move into larger, more complicated projects and will start manufacturing and installation for five of the largest projects we have ever taken on as a firm.”
